Institutions of Higher Learning

Gordon County is in close proximity to six accredited institutions of higher learning:

Coosa Valley Technical College, a unit of the Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education, was established in 1962 and expanded into Gordon County in 1997. The college, which serves over 8,000 students annually, offers adult literacy education, technical education at the degree, diploma, and certificate levels, and customized business and industry training. Kennesaw State University, a four year non-residential college of the University System of Georgia located in Kennesaw/Cobb County, was charted in 1963 and serves approximately 14,000 students. The college offers a wide array of baccalaureate degree programs and an expanding array of professional master’s degree programs.

Dalton State College, a four year non-residential college of the University System of Georgia located in Dalton/Whitfield County, was charted in 1963 and serves approximately 3,600 students. The college offers associate, certificate, and targeted baccalaureate programs of study as well as a wide variety of public service and continuing education activities.

Berry College, a private coeducational four year institution located in Rome/Floyd County on a 28,000 acre campus, was founded in 1902 and serves over 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The college offers accredited arts, sciences, and professional programs plus specialized graduate programs in education and business administration. Berry College was ranked first in the South among undergraduate comprehensive colleges in the 2002 U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges” and among the top ten percent of the colleges in Peterson’s Competitive College Guide for 2002.

Shorter College, a private coeducational four year institution located in Rome/Floyd County was founded in 1873 and offers strong liberal arts programs in a Christian setting. The college also has many study-abroad programs.

Georgia Highlands, a two year unit of the University System of Georgia and located in Rome/Floyd County on a 226 acre campus, was founded in 1970 and serves approximately 2,500 students who commute from throughout a large portion of northwest Georgia and northeast Alabama. The college offers associate degree programs in art, sciences, applied sciences, and numerous non-credit professional development programs.
